Winter Hair Care Tips

March 30, 2023

Healthy, strong hair doesn’t happen by accident. It takes regular care and attention, along with a solid knowledge of proper hair care techniques. You can buy the most expensive hair care products in the world, but ignoring the factors that influence the condition of your strands on a daily basis is like pouring money down the drain – literally!

One thing that most people don’t realize is how hair needs change throughout the year. While it seems intuitive that the summer months may be the harshest on hair, the cold winter months can actually cause far more damage.

How? People tend to let down their hair care guard in the cloudier, colder winter months. But sun exposure during winter activities like skiing, skating or snowboarding, whipping winds, icy outside temperatures and harsh indoor heating all assault your hair on a regular basis during the long, cold months of winter. Without proper care, you can be left with dull, lifeless locks.

When the winter hair blues kick in, try these tried-and-true treatments to rejuvenate your locks.

Up The Conditioner

Winter is no time to skimp on your conditioner. During the cold months it is extra important to apply a thick, deep-moisturizing conditioner every day. Products that contain essential fatty acids and humectants help attract and hold moisture within the hair, especially important in the dry winter months.

Also incorporate a deep conditioning treatment into your regular hair care routine. These once or twice weekly applications will go a long way toward keeping your hair healthy and hydrated, no matter what the weather holds.

Stop Static Cling

More than a mere frustration, static cling can wreak havoc on delicate hair strands. To immediately alleviate static cling, head to your laundry room for relief. The same dryer sheet that eliminates static from your clothes will also smooth flyaway hair. Just lightly rub the dryer sheet on your dry hair and watch static disappear.

For more static control, switch to cream-based styling products. Creams work better than gels at controlling unwanted flyaway hair because they add extra moisture to the hair. Also avoid hair sprays and other products with high alcohol content, which just dries hair out.

Turn Down The Heat

During the dry winter months, avoid using heated appliances as much as possible. Hair dryers, curling wands and straightening irons can sap much needed moisture from your locks, resulting in dry, lifeless strands. If you do need to use a styling tool, opt for the coolest setting possible to avoid unnecessary damage.

Choose Shampoo Wisely

Perhaps the best thing you can do to ensure healthy winter hair is to choose the right shampoo for your hair type. Shampoos that contain more natural ingredients and fewer chemicals will benefit your hair most. Some ingredients that are especially good for rejuvenating winter hair are argan oil, coconut oil and shea butter.
