While most of you are quite familiar with a curling iron and how its used, the curling wand is a newer hair appliance and may have you wondering, whats the difference between the two? Let’s break it down and go over the pro’s and con’s of each.
The Curling Iron
The curling iron features a straight (non-tapered) barrel and a clamp which holds the hair in place during styling. Available in different barrel sizes, you can choose the one based on the type of curls you want to create. A smaller barrel will create tight ringlets while a larger barrel will create loose, big curls.
Pros – for first time users, a curling iron can be a little easier to use. With the attached clamp, it holds the hair in place while you style and creates polished curls.
Cons – to achieve different size curls or natural looking waves you will need different sized curling irons. The clamp can also leave behind unsightly dents in the hair.
The Curling Wand
Curling wands are available in both tapered and non tapered styles, with the tapered barrel being the better choice. (See pros for more) A curling wand does not have a clip so you must hold the hair in place while styling.
Pros – With a tapered barrel you can create different size curls and natural looking waves with just one tool. While using a curling wand for the first time can be a little tricky, after just a few uses you will find it takes less time to style compared to the curling iron. A wand creates more natural looking curls and waves and because there is no clip, you get smooth styling without any annoying creases.
Cons – as mentioned above, it can take a little bit of practice getting used to and because its more of a hands on tool you must be careful not to touch the hot barrel during styling. Most curling wands come with a heat protectant glove to help avoid this, however after some practice you will most likely find yourself not needing it.
So there you have it. Curling Wand vs Curling Iron. While both may be beneficial to have on hand for different looks, I personally prefer the versatility and the more natural appearance the wand creates but would love to hear which of the two you prefer and why so leave a comment and let us know!
