Excessive heat styling, environmental factors and even genetics can wreak havoc on your tender tresses. Split ends, frizz, dullness and breakage are just a few signs that your strands are suffering.
When your locks look the worse for wear, it is time to get serious about hair protection. While nothing will return your tresses to their pre-damaged state, there are a number of things you can do to protect your damaged hair.
Ditch the Heat
While it may be unrealistic to totally avoid using heat to dry or style your damaged hair, minimizing the amount of heat you subject your strands to will go a long way. Whenever possible, allow your hair to air dry and use natural, no-heat techniques to create curls and waves.
When you do need to use heat to dry or style, always start with a heat protection product to create an insulating layer between your locks and the styling tool. Whether you choose a serum, cream or spray, a thermal protection product will be the perfect defense your damaged locks require.
Dry It Right
There is a right – and wrong – way to blow dry your hair. Beyond selecting the lowest heat setting needed to get the job done, when you blow dry always focus exclusively on the area from the roots to mid length. Avoid applying dryer heat to the ends of your hair, as the tips are the most susceptible to additional damage – even from a single round with the hair dryer. Keep your hair dryer constantly moving, as allowing it to linger too long on one spot can cause additional damage.
Always remember to first apply a heat protective product before you start blow drying, too.
Do Include Regular Deep Conditioning Treatments
When your hair is damaged, it is in an extra fragile state. To prevent further damage and minimize the appearance of dryness and frizz, don’t skip on the deep conditioning treatments. Whether you use one of the many off-the-shelf products or opt for a DIY treatment from ingredients in your own kitchen pantry, be sure to give your damaged hair a weekly boost of moisture with a deep conditioning treatment. These weekly sessions will help keep damaged locks smooth and protected.
Don’t Ignore The Ends
The key to protecting damaged hair is to eliminate the most damaged bits as quickly as possible, thus preventing further damage. Since your ends usually show the most wear-and-tear, it is very important to get regular trims to eliminate split ends that can quickly make their way up the hair shaft – sometimes all the way to the roots! Visit your hair stylist at least every eight weeks for a trim to eradicate split end damage and keep the rest of your hair healthy.
