How To Help Damaged Hair Grow

March 30, 2023

When your hair is damaged, every day can feel like a bad hair day. No matter what caused your damage – too much ultraviolet ray exposure, too many color experimentations or just styling too often with the hot dryer or curling wand, damaged hair doesn’t just wreak havoc on your confidence, but it can also prevent healthy hair growth.

When hair damage is extreme, sometimes your best bet is to simply throw in the towel and chop it all off. A very drastic step, but in some cases the fastest way to grow a head of healthy, new hair. The good news is that for most cases of mild to moderate hair damage, there are tried-and-true strategies to help repair your tender tresses and bring them back to a healthy state and keep growing.

So forget the scissors for a second and try some of these tips to nurture your locks back into shape.

Wash Hair Every Other Day

Daily shampooing can quickly cause even the healthiest hair to dry out. When your hair is already damaged, it is even more important to go easy on the washing routine. When it is time to cleanse your tresses, choose a nourishing and moisturizing shampoo specially formulated for damaged hair and avoid extra hot water. Follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. The addition of argan oil into your hair cleansing routine will also promote damaged hair repair and growth.

The extra nutrients found in shampoos and conditioners designed for damaged hair will give your strands an extra boost of protection and help minimize further damage. On the days you skip washing, be sure to apply a moisturizing conditioner in the shower and work it through from roots to tips, then rinse with lukewarm water.

Deep Condition Every Week

For an extra dose of nourishment, feed your damaged hair with a weekly deep-conditioning hair mask. While daily conditioning is an essential part of hair care, skipping on a weekly deep conditioning treatment robs your damaged hair of the extra nutrients it needs to combat the damage and return to a healthier state. Argan oil has been proven to be an especially beneficial ingredient to return damaged hair to normal, so try and find products that contain 100% pure Argania spinosa kernel oil (argan oil).

Embrace an Au Naturel Look

There is no faster way to change up your look than by changing the color or texture of your hair. Unfortunately there is also no faster way to inflict damage on your delicate locks than with the harsh chemicals found in coloring, perming or relaxing products. Regular use of these products results in breakage and split ends – both of which inhibit proper, healthy hair growth.

The only certain way to avoid chemical damage is to skip these processes altogether. While sun-kissed highlights, stick-straight strands or a head full of permanent bouncy curls may be tempting, resist the urge and opt instead for a natural look. It is your best bet to avoid new or further damage to your hair and promote healthy hair growth.

Be Gentle With Hair Bands

Nobody will argue that a ponytail is a quick and easy hairstyle solution. Whether keeping your hair out of the way during a workout or just camouflaging a very bad hair day, ponytails will never go out of style. When you opt for a ponytail, keep it loose and only use non-metal hair elastics. The metal can catch on your delicate strands, causing breakage. Pulling your hair back too tightly can cause a condition known as traction alopecia – a condition that severely inhibits healthy hair growth.

Get Regular Trims

One of the most effective ways to help damaged hair grow is to see your stylist every six weeks for a trim. While it may seem counter-intuitive to cut your hair to make it grow, leaving split ends untended only allows them to travel further up the hair shaft, causing more damage. Keeping split ends in check is the most effective way to encourage healthy hair growth.

Protect Your Tresses 24/7

There’s a reason that every beach bum or bunny you’ve ever met has a head full of platinum streaked strands. The sun’s powerful ultraviolet rays strip the hair of its natural protectants and allow the strands to become bleached out. To avoid the damage caused by the sun, be sure to apply a sun protectant treatment to your hair or wear a wide brimmed hat whenever you head outdoors.

Likewise, before you turn on your hair dryer or plug in the flat iron, be sure to first treat your tresses with a thermal-protection product. These sprays, gels and lotions provide a protective covering for your strands, and help keep heat damage at bay.
